Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the national flag and delivered his seventh consecutive Independence Day speech from the iconic Red Fort on Saturday this morning. As India battles with COVID-19, the independence from the British rule is being celebrated in a subdued manner with strict social distancing and safety measures in place. This marks PM Modi's second Independence Day speech since he won a second term.
"I'm missing our children, the future of our nation, who are not in this programme", said the Prime Minister, stating that they'd been "caged" due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Here the Highlights of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation:
1) Becoming Atmanirbhar Bharat of Utmost Important
PM said "History is evidence to the fact that when India is determined to achieve something, it has always done so". He also said that a self-reliant India has now become the mantra for 130 crore Indians. We need to be self-reliant in the farm sector. India has recently removed all restriction from the agriculture and farming sector.
He further went on to delineate the need for a stronger, connected and comprehensive infrastructural network in the country. "Today, we have opened up our space sector to the private sector. We never made PPE Kits, our production of masks and ventilators but today we are making it all. Over the last year, with an 18% rise, FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) have broken all past records. Towards this goal, an initiative of 110 lakh crores was announced. About 7,000 projects of different sectors have been identified to bring new revolution in infrastructure. I always say that if India faces lakhs of challenges, it also has 130 crore solutions", the PM said.
"Vocal for local should be the slogan for the new, independent India", he reiterated.
2) New Education Policy / Digital India
New Education Policy 2020 will shape the India of the 21st century. It will help Indian citizens become "global citizens". It has also focused on research and development to make India a key R&D destination for the world. The nation has accepted new methods of transactions-Digital transactions have already crossed 3 lakh crore. In the next 1,000 days, villages across the country will have optical fibre connections available.
3) COVID-19 Vaccine / Health Sector
Scientists are working hard for corona virus vaccine. Three Indian vaccines are in different testing stages. Once it is closer to getting final clearances, we will announce a road map which we have ready for distribution. He confirmed that three Indian-manufactured vaccine for COVID-19 were at different levels of testing, and steps had been taken by the government to ensure they could be distributed as soon as they were given the green light.
He further went on to thank the corona warriors of the country and also saluted the country's unwavering spirit in this time of crisis. The PM also condoled the floods in many South Indian states that have caused great damaged to life and property.
He further said that scheme like the "Jal Jeevan Mission" have empowered the spirit of cooperative, competitive federalism.
National Digital Health Mission
Today we are lunching a National Digital Health Mission. It will be completely technology-based. Every Indian will get a Health ID card. Every time you visit a doctor or a pharmacy, everything will be logged in this health card in your profile on a national scale.
PM Modi said that this project will leverage the power of technology to create a healthier India. The blueprint of the scheme was reportedly launched in 2019, and high-quality healthcare by leveraging open digital systems.

4) J&K / Ladakh
"From LAC to LOC, our jawans have given befitting reply", said the Prime Minister.
The PM also spoke about the abrogation of article 370 and how it has been a year since Jammu and Kashmir has seen "Independence from article". Speaking on Ladakh, the PM said that the region showed how India responds to those who threaten her territorial integrity.
Be it terrorism or expansionism, India is standing up to both and defeating it. Today the world stands with India, and to get 184 votes out of 192 nations in the UN for a (non-permanent) seat at the UN Security Council is a testament of it.
PM thanked to all the sarpanches across Jammu and Kashmir, who are putting in a great effort to ensure development reaches everyone. Ladakh is leading the way and is focusing on becoming carbon-neutral. Just as Sikkim has made its mark as an organic state, efforts are being made to make Ladakh a carbon neutral region.
5) Climate Change
We are working on mission mode to ensure that pollution levels across India drop significantly. Climate change is of great concern to us. Thus we are focusing on clean energy and solar power to take us forward and ensure that our per ca pita carbon foot is reduced.
6) Relation with Neighbouring Countries
"For India, neighbours are not only ones we share a border with, but all those who have a bonding of the heart with us. Today, India has close relation in the greater neighbourhood. We are working together and have a lot of mutual respect for each other to ensure peace and stability in Southeast Asia" PM said.
In his Independence Day speech today, he did not mention China by name, and instead took recourse to rhetoric to comment on the issue.
7) Defence Production
Today to become Atma-Nirbhar in defence production is a top priority. Now, from pistols and guns to tanks and fighter jets like the Tejas, from artillery guns to missiles, everything will be made in India.
8) Fibre Optic cable & Focus on Cyber Security
He also said that India is not just the mainland and the northeast, but also thousands of islands. Government will bring high-speed internet and other benefits to residents in those islands which connect 6 lakh villages. In next 1,000 days, Lakshadweep will also be connected with high-speed internet and digitisation.
When there is an increase in internet connectivity, cyber crime activity also gets increased rapidly which can happen through online transactions, data phishing activities etc. PM Modi said that the government would soon introduce a new cyber security policy as the rising threat from cyberspace could have an impact on India’s social and economic development.

9) On Ram Temple
PM Modi also said "Today, Indians have chosen to be united. Peace and respect for each other is what defines us as a nation. Recently, the Ayodhya dispute was resolved in a peaceful and legal manner".
Prime Minister also announced that the center has set up a committee to reconsider the minimum age of marriage for girls in India.
